Sharing a Way of Life
For Sarah and George Murray, opening a private walking track was about sharing the unique beauty and tranquillity of their property with others, while building something meaningful for their family and wider community.
When Sarah and George Murray moved to Aschworth Station, 15 minutes out of Blenheim, they saw more than just a farm. They saw an opportunity to share their love of the land with others and the chance to build on Sarah’s background in tourism and marketing. ‘We really wanted to open the property up to other people; to invite people behind the farm gate for them to be able to experience the way that we live,’ she explains.
Having been on the property for five years, the young family set about designing purpose-built hunting tents that embraced their desire for luxury, while paying homage to the past. ‘Based on 1920 deer stalker tents, the design talks to the history of the property while being indulgent spaces in which to rejuvenate at the end of a long day,’ says Sarah. ‘Think wool insulation, wool-topped beds, woollen blankets and beautiful linens; all stunning natural fibres, that draw on our Merino farming roots, to keep you comfortable and warm.’
Food is at the heart of the Aschworth Station experience and walkers can delight in having ‘access to gourmet meals from dawn until dusk’. Collaborating with local company Kaiaka Catering, Sarah and George have crafted a menu that is beautiful, fresh and beyond what you’d ordinarily make for yourself at home. ‘Think gourmet but approachable – buckwheat pancakes, chai pot puddings, salmon and potato cakes – and that’s just breakfast.
‘The menus are all self-finishing, so we will leave detailed instructions for people to heat and dress the dish, otherwise it is all there ready to go when you come in from your walk.’
Sarah’s passion for hospitality and her guests’ comfort is evident in every detail and that comes right down to working with people on their needs. ‘We want to ensure we have all the little details covered, that people didn’t even know they needed until they got here,’ she laughs. ‘We just want people to come, enjoy being here and do what they have come for – which is to enjoy the outdoors and relax with friends and family.’
A huge part of this relaxation is The Lodge, a beautifully curated central space for guests to gather. ‘It has all the facilities you need, including expansive outdoor entertaining spaces to sit back in and soak in the surrounds,’ explains Sarah.
Over three days, guests are invited to summit Wards Peak, indulge in swimming holes, experience the family homestead, take advantage of the option for a guided tour to learn about the local flora and fauna, or take part in big-screen stretch Pilates on the supplied wool yoga mats.
For Sarah, opening Aschworth Station’s private walking track is about more than business, it is about sharing a way of life. ‘We feel lucky that we can open up the place to others,’ she says. And it’s this spirit of generosity, combined with her meticulous care, that makes Aschworth Station a truly special destination.
This is much more than a business – it is a labour of love, a testament to the family’s vision, and a warm invitation for others to experience the magic of Marlborough’s countryside.
