Make Your Walls Talk with Resene
Colour, design and texture are guaranteed to add instant visual interest and depth to your interior. We chat to Brooke Calvert, Resene Colour Consultant, about where to start.
Today’s range of wallpapers truly offers something quite unique to the interiors of our homes. With the progress in new printing techniques and finishes available we are spoilt for choice. From bold patterns, botanicals, geometrics, faux effects, murals, wildlife, blooms, the list really does go on and on!
While you can browse the wallpaper collection online, there is nothing better than being able to touch, experience and see the colours and textures in person, so I like to recommend people start by heading into their local colorshop, as flicking through the swatch books in person is a huge help.
When working on a design project it is always super helpful to have samples that you can trial alongside your other selections or existing elements. Most of our wallpaper books offer sampling, which is around half a metre in size, or drop. The perfect amount to give you an idea on how the pattern will repeat, and large enough to be useful. Try hanging it on the wall you intend to use it on to get a sense of it in your space.
If samples are not available for your selected paper, borrowing the book is a great alternative to ensure everything is going to coordinate with the rest of your space.
Once you know how, wallpapering is fairly easy, especially with today’s paste-the-wall products, however there are a number of professionals who can lend a hand in getting it on the wall just how you envision, so don’t struggle on alone!
One of the most important things to remember is that you are not bound to today’s wallpaper choice forever. Most modern wallpapers are strippable and easily changed – just like your paint colour! So if you love it now, go for it. You can always change it out when trends, or your tastes change.
And remember most wallpapers are only available for 2–3 years, sometimes less, so make sure you have plenty when you start your project. It is a great idea to purchase an extra roll just in case you need some for repairs later.
