An intermediate-level crochet project that is as pretty as it is practical.

MATERIALS

Any DK yarn (I used 4 Seasons pure wool 8 ply)
6mm crochet hook

ABBREVIATIONS

This pattern is written using standard US crochet terminology.

Ch = Chain(s)
Sl st = Slip stitch
Dc = Double crochet
Sc = Single crochet
St(s) = Stitch(es)
Puff St = Puff stitch

INSTRUCTIONS

Puff stitch: Yarn over, insert hook in the desired st, pull yarn, you have 3 loops on your hook, yarn over, insert hook in the same st, pull yarn, you have 5 loops on the hook, yarn over, insert hook in the same st, pull yarn, you have 7 loops on the hook, yarn over and pull through all 7 loops on the hook.

Note: Ch 1 at the beginning of each round doesn’t count as a st.

Round 1: create a magic ring, ch1, 6 sc into magic ring, sl st to the first sc in the round. [6sc]

Round 2: ch1, 2sc in the same st, 2sc in each stitch across the round, sl st to the first sc in the round. [12sc]

Round 3: ch1, 2sc in the same st, 1sc in the next st, *2sc in the next st, 1sc in the next st*, repeat * across the round, sl st to the first sc in the round. [18sc]

Round 4: ch1, 2sc in the same st, 1sc in the next 2st, *2sc in the next st, 1sc in the next 2st*, repeat * across the round, sl st to the first sc in the round. [24sc]

Round 5: ch1, 2sc in the same st, 1sc in the next 3st, *2sc in the next st, 1sc in the next 3st*, repeat * across the round, sl st to the first sc in the round. [30sc]

Round 6: ch1, 2sc in the same st, 1sc in the next 4st, *2sc in the next st, 1sc in the next 4st*, repeat * across the round, sl st to the first sc in the round. [36sc]

Round 7: ch1, 2sc in the same st, 1sc in the next 5st, *2sc in the next st, 1sc in the next 5st*, repeat * across the round, sl st to the first sc in the round. [42sc]

Round 8: ch1, 2sc in the same st, 1sc in the next 6st, *2sc in the next st, 1sc in the next 6st*, repeat * across the round, sl st to the first sc in the round. [48sc]

Round 9: ch1, 2sc in the same st, 1sc in the next 7st, *2sc in the next st, 1sc in the next 7st*, repeat * across the round, sl st to the first sc in the round. [54sc]

Round 10: ch1, 2sc in the same st, 1sc in the next 8st, *2sc in the next st, 1sc in the next 8st*, repeat * across the round, sl st to the first sc in the round. [60sc]

Round 11: ch1, 2sc in the same st, 1sc in the next 9st, *2sc in the next st, 1sc in the next 9st*, repeat * across the round, sl st to the first sc in the round. [66sc]

Round 12: ch1, 2sc in the same st, 1sc in the next 10st, *2sc in the next st, 1sc in the next 10st*, repeat * across the round, sl st to the first sc in the round. [72sc]

Round 13: ch1, 2sc in the same st, 1sc in the next 11st, *2sc in the next st, 1sc in the next 11st*, repeat * across the round, sl st to the first sc in the round. [78sc]

Round 14: ch1, sc in the same st, sc in the next st, sc across the round, sl st to the first sc in the round. [78sc]

Round 15: ch1, sc in the same st, skip next 2st, (puff st, ch2, puff st, ch2, puff st, ch1) in the next st, skip next 2st, *sc in the next st, skip next 2st, (puff st, ch2, puff st, ch2, puff st, ch1) in the next st, skip next 2st*, repeat * across the round, sl st to the first sc in the round.

Round 16: ch3, 2dc in the same st, ch2, sc in the middle puff st from previous round, ch2, *3dc in the next sc from previous round, ch2, sc in the middle puff st from previous round, ch2*, repeat * across the round, sl st to the 3rd ch of ch3 at the beginning of the round.

Round 17: ch1, *(puff st, ch2, puff st, ch2, puff st, ch1) in the middle dc of 3dc from previous round, sc in the next sc from previous round*, repeat * across the round, sl st to the first puff st in the round.

Round 18 – 23: repeat previous 2 rounds.

Round 24: repeat round 16, fasten off.
