For the Love of Velvet

Velvets are all the rage, and yet our love affair with this textile began generations ago. Interior designer Taryn Beech from Maree Hynes Interiors offers a modern take on this versatile fabric.

Velvet is dense and rich, versatile and stylish. We are overwhelmed with the amazing selections available in furniture, homewares and textiles. Interior trends can last decades if executed well, and the latest version of the velvet trend has embraced rich jewel tones, not shying away from a real design punch. Deep ocean toned velvets are flooding the market and the options available range from upholstery to curtains.

Velvet creates a warmth you can’t get from a cold leather sofa, and by reupholstering your existing furniture in velvet, you can achieve a trendy and comfortable spot you will never want to leave. For example, a classic chesterfield sofa upholstered in a patterned velvet will make a design classic bang on-trend. Statement armchairs in bold hues are another great way to introduce this fabric, and pairing them with feather-filled cushions enhances the sumptuous effect.

A s you transition your bedding for the cooler months, try layering a luxurious coverlet over your duvet and plush euro pillows to add panache and cosiness. This season I have been delighted to see a departure from greys in bedding, to chocolate browns which are comforting and warm. Florals are here to stay but this season they are dark and handsome, a good balance between feminine and masculine for the bedroom.

Velvet is alluring and sexy. It’s a fabric that translates well into both transitional décor and modern style. With a large variety of velvets available, there are plenty of options when seeking the perfect one to suit your style and personality. Although the phrase ‘trend’ can be intimidating, interior trends can last the test of time if done in a classic and chic way. Without doubt, velvet has the sticking power to overcome trend status and will be here for years to come.
