Tohutohu tao kai (Recipe): He pihikete whetū (Star biscuits)


Learning a little more te reo Māori just got easier (and more delicious).

Iconic Kiwi brand Edmonds is set to launch its first te reo Māori cookbook, Edmonds Taku Puka Tohutao Tuatahi, based on the much-loved and bestselling Edmonds My First Cookbook.

Edmonds Taku Puka Tohutao Tuatahi makes learning te reo Māori fun and easy, as whānau cook and bake together. Edmonds has shared with thisnzlife.co.nz one of the seven new recipes found in the cookbook: Pihikete Whetū (Star Biscuits), created by cook Kirsten Holtz.

Kia ¾ o te kapu huka kuoro
Kia 2 ngā kokoiti waitāwhara wanira
Kia 1½ ngā kapu o tā Edmonds puehu parāoa kounga
Kia ¾ o te kapu o tā Edmonds puehu kānga

HEI WHAKARĀKEI
Kia 150 karamu o te tiakarete uriuri mō te tao
Kia 30 karamu o te ruireka

1. Ki te koheri hiko, koheria te pata, te huka kuoro me te wanira mō te 3 meneti, kia tāhungahunga rā anō.
2. Tātarihia atu te puehu parāoa me te puehu kānga ki te ranunga, ka whakahanumi ai kia hua ai he pokenga mohe. Ahuahungia hei pōro.
3. Ūhia tētahi paepae tunu ki te rautunu. Meatia te pokenga ki te pepa, ka taupoki atu ai ki tētahi anō wāhi rautunu. Takapapangia (kei kōrahirahi rawa).
4. Whakamātaohia ki te pouaka mātao mō te 20 meneti. Whakamahana tōmuatia te umu kia 180° tohurau te pāmahana.
5. Pokaina ake ētahi whetū i te pokenga, ka whakatakoto ai ki te paepae tunu. Tunua ki te umu mō te 8-10 meneti, kia tūākōura rā anō rānei. Tangohia atu i te paepae tunu, ka tuku ai kia mātao haere.
6. Ki te ngaruiti, tunua te tiakarete ki te pae wawaenga mō te 30 hēkona, ka kōrori ai. Toaitia kia rewa, kia mōhanihani rā anō.
7. Toua tētahi haurua o ia pihikete ki te tiakarete, ka whakarākei ai ki te riureka.

HE KUPU ĀWHINA

STAR BISCUITS
Time to make: 40 mins
Makes 18 biscuits

INGREDIENTS
170 g butter
¾ cup caster sugar
2 tsp vanilla essence
1½ cups Edmonds high-grade flour
¾ cup Edmonds cornflour

TO DECORATE
150 g dark cooking chocolate
30 g sprinkles

METHOD
1. Beat with electric beaters the butter, caster sugar and vanilla for 3 minutes, until light and fluffy.
2. Sift flour and cornflour into the mixture and combine to form a soft dough. Mould into a ball shape.
3. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Place the dough on the paper and place another sheet of baking paper on the top. Roll out (not too thinly).
4. Chill in the fridge for 20 minutes and preheat the oven to 180°C.
5. Cut the dough into star shapes and arrange on a lined tray. Bake for 8–10 minutes, or until pale golden. Remove from tray and allow to cool.
6. Microwave the chocolate for 30 seconds on medium, then stir. Repeat until melted and smooth.
7. Dip half of each biscuit into the chocolate and decorate with sprinkles.

Perfect for celebrating Matariki.
