The Ultimate Wellington Weekend

Whether you are hopping across Cook Strait or taking a quick domestic flight, Wellington provides a timeless 48-hour escape – proving that the very best long-weekend getaways are sitting right here in our own backyard.

For those seeking a refined long weekend without leaving Aotearoa, Wellington remains the ultimate short-haul indulgence. You don’t need an international passport to experience world-class dining, immersive design and a creative energy that feels effortlessly cosmopolitan. The weekend itinerary flows with delightful ease. Spend sun-drenched mornings sipping coffee along Cuba Street, afternoons browsing renowned art galleries and boutique local designer stores, and golden hours strolling the bustling, scenic waterfront toward Oriental Bay. As dusk falls, the city’s hidden laneways come alive with stellar bistros, tucked-away speakeasy cocktail dens, and a live performance scene that continuously pushes artistic boundaries.

Compact enough to explore entirely on foot, yet dynamic enough to feel like a complete world away, Wellington offers the perfect blend of culture, culinary flair and laid-back capital style.

Spoil yourself

The Wellington Apothecary is a botanical skincare factory, herbal dispensary, natural therapy clinic and alchemists delight. Established in 2014 by three friends and herbalists who conjured this dream while living in Whāingaroa, Raglan – Laura, Chantal and Jemma, together they created an inner city sanctuary offering a tranquil and sensory experience to rest and reset. You are welcome to sample each product, see them being made and gather over a hot cup of herbal tea. You can even talk to an apothecarian in store and have remedies curated and custom made for you.

When you enter, you are greeted with enchanting scents and gallery style walls adorned with plant-based teas, tonics and skincare that have been created to provide simple rituals for daily self-care. Their unique recipes are based on contemporary research and traditional wisdom, and each product is thoroughly tested on humans (not animals). All of their products are made fresh, by hand in small batches with the finest natural and organic ingredients.

At the Wellington Apothecary you will find an eclectic bunch of herbalists, naturopaths, anthropologists, massage therapists, holistic facialists, artists, yoginis, gardeners, researchers and manufacturers. They are interested in exploring holistic and embodied ways of healing – as individuals, as a community and as inhabitants of the earth that is our collective home. wellingtonapothecary.co.nz

Artistic Soul Filled Days

Parallel to its culinary prowess, Wellington’s creative soul shines through a dynamic and walkable art landscape. At the waterfront’s edge, no trip to Wellington is complete without a stop at Te Papa Tongarewa. Nearby, City Gallery Wellington serves as the capital’s hub for contemporary art, staging bold, provocative exhibitions from leading international and local figures. For fine art enthusiasts strolling the bohemian Cuba Quarter and surrounding laneways, key commercial spaces like McLeavey Gallery, Page Galleries and Solander Gallery highlight standout contemporary painters, printmakers and sculptors. From grand national institutions to intimate independent spaces, the city’s art scene is as rich, vibrant and accessible as its dining.

Immerse yourself in Nature

Experience one of the most biodiverse square miles in Aotearoa New Zealand just 10 minutes out of the central city.  Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne is a valley full of regenerating native forest and a safe haven for many of the rare and threatened species found only in Aotearoa. Takahē, kākā, kiwi pukupuku/little spotted kiwi, hihi/stitchbird, tuatara, Cook Strait Giant wētā and tīeke/North Island saddleback are among the many species that have returned to Wellington because of the sanctuary.

Since its world first urban mammalian predator-exclusion fence went up in 1999 and around a dozen different mammalian predator species were removed, the valley has come alive. With a bold 500-year vision to restore it as close as possible to its original state, it’s ambitious, but te taiao/the natural world is resilient. With 32km of tracks to explore and guided tours running during the day and at night, there’s an option perfect for your available time and fitness. This is a must-visit for all and is easy to get to, by free shuttle, by car, by bus or by foot. visitzealandia.com

Delightful Dining

Like our other major cities, Wellington’s dining scene has taken centre stage on the global map with the arrival of the Michelin Guide Aotearoa. While iconic destinations like Logan Brown topped the list, Jano Bistro, which delivers an intimate, garden-to-table experience with evolving seasonal tasting menus rooted in French technique is a must, and Ortega Fish Shack, a charming maritime-inspired bistro celebrated for serving fine dining in disguise, where sustainably sourced kaimoana takes pride of place, is another of our picks! The list was of course complemented by a vibrant collection of Bib Gourmand gems like 1154 Pastaria and Cicio Cacio. Wellington’s compact streets make world-class gastronomy feel delightfully approachable. You can’t go wrong!
