Screen Sirens podcast: UnREAL
In this episode of Screen Sirens, reviewers Emma Rawson and Andrea Burke discuss the Lightbox drama UnREAL. The show follows behind-the-scenes chaos surrounding the production of a Bachelor-style reality show. Season one and two have just finished airing on Lightbox so it’s the ideal time to binge-watch the entire series.
The show is based on the real life experiences of Sarah Gertrude, who worked on the Bachelor. In an article in The New Yorker Sarah describes her role on the show as getting the contestants to “open up, and to give them terrible advice, and to deprive them of sleep… a complicated manipulation through friendship.”
The show is one of a few TV series that passes the Bechdel test – which measures female presence and subjectivity in film and TV.
