UnREAL follows the making of a reality show and how the show producers manipulate the contestants to create drama.
The show is based on the real life experiences of Sarah Gertrude, who worked on the Bachelor. In an article in The New Yorker Sarah describes her role on the show as getting the contestants to “open up, and to give them terrible advice, and to deprive them of sleep… a complicated manipulation through friendship.”
The show is one of a few TV series that passes the Bechdel test – which measures female presence and subjectivity in film and TV.
