Recipe: Make your own orange wine liqueur

This is delicious in winter, but you can also keep it for a summer drink. It makes a lovely gift.

Recipe: Jane Wrigglesworth

Makes: 1.5-2 litres
Time: 40 minutes (not including waiting time)

INGREDIENTS

4 large oranges
dried peel of 2 oranges
1 bottle (750ml) rosé wine
150g caster sugar
100ml vodka
50ml brandy

METHOD

Juice two of the oranges and pour into a large (1.5-2 litre) jar. Peel and roughly chop the other two oranges, discard the pith and pips. Place the chopped oranges and the dried orange peel into the jar.

Add the rosé wine and secure the lid. Set aside in a cool spot for 2 weeks, turning once a day.

Strain out the oranges and peel, pour the liquid back into the jar and add the sugar, vodka, and brandy. Stir, secure the lid, and set back in a cool spot for a week. Shake every day until the sugar dissolves.

Strain through cheesecloth or muslin and pour into a clear jar or bottle.
