Quality Eye Care
Dispensing optician Vanessa Cumming provides an insight into how to combat those tired, dry eyes.
We all know the feeling – often stemmed from looking at a screen for too long – tired, irritated eyes and blurred vision. Add in a sensitivity to light, and it could be that you are experiencing dry eye disease, which impacts around one in 10 adults at some point in their lives.
Dry eye disease is a common issue affecting millions worldwide, frequently linked to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). The meibomian glands in the eyelids produce vital oils that ensure a stable tear film. When these glands become blocked or fail to function, the result can be dry, irritated eyes.
Symptoms of MGD include a gritty or burning sensation, redness, excessive tearing, and blurred vision. Environmental factors, prolonged screen time, and certain medications can exacerbate the condition and it is common to find the discomfort worsens in dry or windy environments and after extended periods of digital use or focusing.
Diagnosing dry eyes involves a comprehensive eye exam, including assessments of tear quality and gland function. There are multiple treatment options for MGD, with the best ones aimed at targeting the root cause.
While a tailored treatment option is required, it can be as simple as making lifestyle modifications and looking at eyelid hygiene; to advanced therapies such as Intense Pulsed Light (IPL). Warm compresses and massage can relieve gland blockage, and IPL therapy is available to effectively target inflammation and improve meibomian gland function.
