Our Readers Book & Podcast Reviews – Summer 2025/6
We are loving the top picks from your reading and listening libraries! Keep them coming.

Fork Sakes, Suzanne Paul & Andrew Papas
Just stumbled across a new Kiwi podcast called Fork Sakes and gave the first episode a listen. I’d highly recommend! Tom Sainsbury is an absolute treat (as always), bringing his classic wit and that warm, lovable charm he does so well. Hosts Suzanne Paul and Andrew Papas are such a great duo too. Their banter, curiosity and all-round good vibes make it feel like you’re right there at the table with them, sharing a laugh and a bite. Natalie, Auckland
The Long Shadow by Cally Whitham (Batemans)
This hard cover book was an investment, but is a tribute to the historically rich and biodiverse ecosystem in Aotearoa, so had to be done!
Through striking visuals and historical insight, it exposes the devastating impact of introduced species on our natural world. Cally Whitham’s powerful portraits invite you to confront the uncomfortable ties between nostalgia, beauty and environmental disruption. Aimee, Little River
The Soldier’s Daughter by Fiona McIntosh (Penguin)
I have read almost all of Fiona McIntosh’s books and this, like the others, didn’t disappoint.
The story of Violet Nash and her father, Charlie, takes us from Scotland, to Tasmania, to France, as they confront ghosts of the past, while trying to propel their dreams forward, all while WWII rages around them.
I enjoyed the journey of education about the intricacies of whiskey distilling that is woven throughout the book and think it is the perfect balance of substance and easy-to-read; a great beach bag accessory this summer. Ruby, Tauranga
Future Bites, Dr Bruce McCabe
This podcast series is a captivating listen. Australian, Dr Bruce McCabe, is a futurist, sharing insights from his global meetings with scientists, innovators, tech specialists and a wide range of other experts. He’s a sought-after keynote speaker so his podcast series with expert guests feels like a free peek into the future and what’s coming at us – inspiring, confronting and totally fascinating. ‘Saving the Future of News’ is a recent episode particularly close to my heart.
