My Corner of NZ

A proud Manawatū local and participant in the Manawatū Gardens Festival, Angela Wilson, alongside her husband Scott, owns the award-winning Cross Hills Gardens. She shares an insight into her slice of paradise and how to maximise your time in this magical part of Aotearoa.

Why visit Manawatū?

Manawatū is known for its warm hospitality and down-to-earth spirit, and that’s no coincidence. The region’s rich farming heritage has shaped a community where knowledge, stories, and skills are proudly passed down through generations.

How am I best to get around?

Manawatū is best explored at your own pace, with lots of opportunities to take a scenic detour and follow your nose to discover something new. By car is a great option to allow this freedom, or if you’re fond of cycling, there are some spectacular cycling routes around the region which would be a great way of experiencing the Manawatū Gardens Festival too!

What makes the Manawatū Gardens Festival so special?

The festival offers a rare opportunity to explore a thoughtfully curated selection of gardens, from charming hidden gems to grand private estates that aren’t usually open to the public. It’s also the ideal time to visit, with spring gardens bursting into full bloom.

Tell us a bit about your involvement with the festival

At Cross Hills, the festival aligns perfectly with our much-loved annual Cross Hills Gardens Country Fair, returning this year on Saturday 15 November. Now in its 17th year, the fair was created to inspire even those who don’t consider themselves garden enthusiasts to discover the joy and beauty a garden can offer. What began as an idea has grown into a vibrant celebration of colour, creativity, and craftsmanship with over 200 quality stalls set among our 18 acres of private rhododendron and azalea gardens. Each year, more than 5,000 visitors from across New Zealand join us to explore, connect, and enjoy a festive day of shopping, music, food, and floral splendour. All just in time for Christmas.

The Manawatū Gardens Festival

The Manawatū Gardens Festival has been growing year-on-year with over 20 gardens participating in this year’s event. Ticketing has been streamlined with no need for carrying cash and coinage – just a quick QR scan at each gate. Angela shares her top tips for making the most of the festival …

  1. Plan ahead – Download the Manawatū Gardens Festival map from Manawatu.co.nz to help plan your route including local cafés, shops, and lookouts along the way.
  2. Take your time – Gardens are best explored slowly. Grab a group of friends and savour the experience.
  3. Pack smart – Comfy walking shoes are a must and bring gumboots just in case.
  4. Be weather-wise – Spring in Manawatū can be four seasons in one day. Dress in layers.
  5. Make a weekend of it – Book local accommodation and fully immerse yourself in the experience.

Top Explore Manawatū via The Country Road, whether that’s in a vehicle or on a bike, it’s the best way to uncover the region’s many hidden gems. Middle Garden lovers will relish getting lost in the vibrant displays found at the Manawatū Gardens Festival held 12–16 November. Above A must-do is the weekly Friday morning farmers’ market in Feilding – a morning bursting with fresh flavours and local character.

Where to…

EAT

We have just tried Feilding’s new restaurant, The Farmers Son, and I can highly recommend their rump steak. There’s a real buzz about the place, and the food is authentic and generous.

If you’re after a peaceful lunch (especially with teens), check out Orlando Country on the outskirts of Palmerston North. We love to set ourselves up for the afternoon with a delicious meal while the boys burn off energy at the driving range.

For fine dining in Feilding, The Strong Room is the place to go. If you’re in a group, book the old vault room for an intimate dining experience with a twist – it is something a bit different!

SLEEP

The places that stand out to me are run by three rural women, all proudly sharing their slice of Manawatū.

Romney Lane Homestead Set on the family’s award-winning farm, it offers luxury accommodation, nature walks, farm experiences, a tennis court and even a delicious gin-tasting experience. It’s the perfect spot for a group of friends or a big family retreat.

Ridge Top Farm Glamping is a magical option for a romantic weekend away. You’ll find catered meals by the talented host, and a scenic farm walk to enjoy where you can see for miles across the surrounding farmland and out to the coast.
