Hitting the Selwyn Slopes
Offering small field support with big field fun, there is much to discover on the ski fields of Selwyn.
‘Selwyn is home to the best unique ski areas in New Zealand,’ enthuses Community and Economic Development Advisor Shay Robinson. Rightfully proud of the offering they have, Shay and the Selwyn District Council are eagerly spreading the word about Ski Selwyn . ‘They are so much closer than you think,’ continues Shay. ‘We have six ski fields which offer uncrowded slopes, friendly Kiwi hospitality and the easiest access to some of the best backcountry skiing in the world,’ all just over an hour from Christchurch.
While many will know Porters Alpine Resort, there is also Temple Basin, Broken River, Mt Olympus, Craigieburn and Cheeseman. Each boast mixed terrain riding from beginner to advanced, ensuring there is something on offer for every member of the family, while their on-site cafés, bar facilities and snow schools ensure the amenity covers every need and want.
What really sets them apart, though, is their on-mountain accommodation, allowing visitors to truly experience what each of these unique fields have to offer. ‘While Selwyn is the perfect destination for a day trip, or a quick half-day on the slopes,’ laughs Shay, ‘the accommodation offering from our fields allows you to relax a bit more and enjoy a mini-break.’
While the perceived barrier of being a club field may have people second-guessing a visit, the warmth and atmosphere on the fields is hard not to get caught up in and you certainly don’t have to be a member to experience and enjoy what they have to offer. In fact all are welcome!
For those eager to get out and experience these stunning spaces, the Chill Pass is for you – the ultimate in multi-mountain ski and snowboard passes.
So what are you waiting for?
