Good Things Take Time

Mike Taylor is a seasoned professional whose vision and leadership has propelled Pie Funds from a one-man-band to one of New Zealand’s premier investment management specialists. We talk to him about Pie’s evolution and how they could help you unlock your financial potential.

In the often complex and daunting world of investment management, Pie Funds stands out as a beacon of transparency, accessibility, and innovative investment strategies.

Founded in 2007, Pie Funds was born out of a desire to challenge the conventional norms of the investment management industry.  Believing many funds were serial underperformers, Taylor saw an opportunity and, despite starting Pie in some of the toughest global conditions on record, has never looked back.

Taylor sought to create something different – a firm that truly understood the needs of individual investors – and has spent the last 17 years broadening Pie’s skill set and product suite, which now sees them offer a diversified range of products including KiwiSaver and Wealth management. They understand that every investor is unique, and as such, their financial strategy should be tailored to their personal goals, risk tolerance, and values.

‘It is about building your financial growth plans with the help of experts,’ says Mike. ‘Which is what we are – specialists in financial growth. We exist to make money for clients so performance matters more than growing our investor base. Our ethos is built on long-term partnerships creating long-term prosperity … because good things take time.

‘It is easy to get your fingers burnt and pay too much for shares or have your KiwiSaver in the wrong portfolio for your retirement needs – that is what we are there for. To guide, advise and inform. We live and breathe it.’

With specialist teams on the ground in New Zealand, Australia and the UK, they have a deep understanding of the markets in which they invest – and this, along with their state-of-the-art technology and software, means Pie has its finger on the pulse 24/7.

A Visionary Leader

As a teenager, Mike was ‘always looking at ways to make money faster’. He recalls applying for a job at a supermarket only to turn it down based of the hourly rate being a youth wage of just $3.50 at the time. ‘I knew there had to be a better way. In what was known then as seventh form (Year 13), I got involved in an economics programme that exposed me to shares. By the end of my first year at university I had my own share portfolio and was helping friends and family grow theirs. I’ve never looked back.’

Mike has spent nearly 30 years honing his expertise in investment management, working domestically and globally, fuelling his passion for financial markets. Combined with his genuine desire to help people achieve their financial goals, Pie Funds was launched with the simple philosophy of outperforming the markets by investing in growth companies.

Under Mike’s leadership, the firm quickly gained recognition for its ability to consistently outperform the market, delivering superior returns while prioritising risk management. His commitment to building a strong, client-focused culture within the firm has been a cornerstone of Pie Funds’ success. He emphasises the importance of trust. ‘Building wealth isn’t just about making money; it’s about creating long-term, sustainable financial security for clients.’

At Home in Hawke’s Bay

While he is quick to admit his drive to be the best has him living and breathing work, Mike relishes living in the fruit bowl of Aotearoa. ‘There aren’t many financial services based outside of Auckland,’ he explains, ‘and while much of my time is spent on the road or in Auckland, it is always nice to return home and soak in the beautiful Hawke’s Bay. It can be an all-consuming job – so being able to take the bike up Te Mata Peak, or a walk along Ocean Beach is welcome.’

From the start, Pie Funds differentiated themselves by adopting an active investment management style that focused on achieving long-term capital growth. The company’s diverse team of experienced portfolio managers and analysts are committed to finding undervalued opportunities across various sectors, both locally and globally, while always keeping the client’s best interest at the forefront.

Why use a specialist Investment Manager?

When it comes to managing your wealth, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of options and strategies available. This is where a specialised investment and wealth manager can make all the difference. Here are some of the top reasons why working with an investment management firm like Pie Funds is a smart decision:

Expert Guidance
Wealth advisors have the expertise and experience to navigate complex financial markets. They can offer insights into investments, tax strategies, estate planning and more, ensuring that you are making informed decisions that align with your long-term goals.

Personalised Financial Planning
A wealth advisor will take the time to understand your unique financial situation, goals and risk tolerance, and develop a plan that’s tailored to your specific needs. This personalised approach can help you achieve your financial objectives more efficiently.

Time-Saving and Stress Reduction
Managing your own investments can be time-consuming and stressful, especially when markets are volatile. An investment manager handles the day-to-day management of your investments, allowing you to focus on other priorities without worrying about your financial future. While you might forget about your KiwiSaver at times, they never do!

Access to Exclusive Investment Opportunities
Investment managers often have access to investment opportunities that may not be available to individual investors. Whether it’s exclusive funds, private equity opportunities or special market insights, this can open doors to investments that can help grow your wealth.

Ongoing Monitoring and Adjustments
Financial markets are constantly changing, and what works today may not work tomorrow. A wealth advisor monitors your portfolio and makes adjustments as needed to ensure that your investments continue to meet your goals, even as market conditions evolve.

Peace of Mind
Ultimately, working with a seasoned investment manager like Pie provides peace of mind. You can rest easy knowing that your investments are being carefully managed by professionals who are committed to helping you achieve your financial goals.
