DIY: How to knit a popcorn-stitch beanie


This cute-as-a-button popcorn stitch beanie from Perriam will keep little warm during winter.

This intermediate pattern was created by the team at Perriam. This knitting pattern for children aged 1-10 years. For a child with a larger head or 8+ years add 2cm [.75 Ins] to the length before shaping the crown.

MATERIALS REQUIRED

1 ball 8 ply merino wool
1 pair 4.00MM needles
1 pair 3.25 mm needles

TENSION

22 sts and 30 rows to 10 cm [4 ins] over stst on 4 mm [6 US] needles.

ABBREVIATIONS

alt = alternate; beg = begin(ning); cm = centimeters; cont = continue; foll = follow(s)ing; gtst = garter stitch (every row knit); ins = inches; K = knit; meas = measures; P = purl; patt = pattern; rem = remain(ing); RSF = right side facing for next row; st(s) = stitch(es); stst = stocking stitch (RS row K, WS row P); tog = together.

SPECIAL ABBREVIATIONS

MB = (make Bobble) [K into front and back] twice into next st, then front again – 5 sts, turn, work 4 rows stst, starting with a P row. Then with left-hand needle pass the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th sts over first st.

MEASUREMENTS

Finished size: Hat 48 cm [19.25 ins] – fits 2-10 years

MATERIALS

Merino 8ply Rust 1 x 50gm ball
One pair each size 3.25 mm [3 US] and 4 mm [6 US] knitting needles.

CORRECT TENSION IS ESSENTIAL

The success of your finished garment depends on tension. Check this carefully before you begin to knit. If there are less sts to 10 cm [4 ins] than stated, your tension is too loose; use smaller needles. If there are more sts your tension is too firm; use larger

To make the hat:
With 3.25 mm [3 US] needles, cast on 98 sts and work rib as foll.
Row 1 – K2, *P2, K2, rep from * to end.
Row 2 – P2, *K2, P2, rep from * to end.
Rep the last 2 rows 3 more times.
Change to 4 mm [6 US] needles.
Work 6 rows of gtst and then 6 rows of stst, then work patt as foll.
Row 1 – K1, *K11, MB, rep from * to last st, K1.
Rows 2 to 12 – Work 11 rows in stst, starting with a Purl row.
Row 13 – K6, MB, *K11, MB, rep from * to last 7 sts, K7.
Row 14 – Purl.
Work stst until Hat meas 12 cm [4.75 ins] from beg, ending with RSF.

Shape the crown:
Row 1 – K1, *K2tog, K10, rep from * to last st, K1.
Row 2 and every alt row – Purl.
Row 3 – K1, *K2tog, K9, rep from * to last st, K1.
Row 5 – K1, *K2tog, K8, rep from * to last st, K1.
Row 7 – K1, *K2tog, K7, rep from * to last st, K1.
Cont dec in this manner, working 1 st less between each dec in every foll alt row until 18 sts rem.
NR – K1, (K2tog) 8 times, K1. 10 sts.

To complete:
Using mattress stitch, join seam.
