Free knitting pattern: Cotton Wool Booties for New Zealand babies in need

Here’s a free pattern to knit some cute cotton wool booties for babies in need World Knit in Public Day.

Warming Hearts Trust is a charity with a vision of ensuring every New Zealand baby goes home warm, and stays warm. On Saturday 9 June, Spotlight stores will mark World Knit in Public Day by inviting New Zealanders to participate in a series of in-store events creating hundreds of knitted blankets and essential items of clothing, which will will be made into bundles and gifted to parents in need.

The charity was was founded by three women (mothers and midwives), all with second jobs, who have witnessed firsthand the unimaginable struggles that many New Zealand families experience every day.
“It’s a hard reality to face, but babies in New Zealand are leaving the hospital unclothed and cold, with no safe bed to sleep in, often living in damp and cold homes,” says Warming Hearts co-founder Victoria Dickinson.

LEVEL: EASY

WHAT YOU’LL NEED
Bella Baby Cotton Wool 8ply 50g x 1 ball 1st Colour (C1) and 1 ball 2nd Colour (C2).
1 pair 3.25mm knitting needles, or size required to give correct tension.
Scissors, yarn needle, tape measure.
4 small buttons (if desired).

SIZE
To Fit Foot (Approx): 10cm (6-9 Months)

TENSION
26 sts and 35 rows to 10cm over stocking st, using 3.25mm needles. These booties have been worked on smaller needles than normally recommended.

INSTRUCTIONS

BOOTIES (MAKE 2)
Beg sole – Using 3.25mm needles and C1, cast on 13 sts.
1st row (RS) – Knit.
2nd row – Purl.
3rd row – K1, inc in next st, knit to last 2 sts, inc in next st, K1. Rep 2nd and 3rd rows once more … 17 sts. Work 25 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.

BOOTIES (MAKE 2)
Beg sole – Using 3.25mm needles and C1, cast on 13 sts.
1st row (RS) – Knit.
2nd row – Purl.
3rd row K1, inc in next st, knit to last 2 sts, inc in next st, K1. Rep 2nd and 3rd rows once more … 17 sts. Work 25 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.
Next row – K1, sl 1, K1, psso, knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1.
Next row – Purl. Rep last 2 rows once more … 13 sts.
Next row – Knit.
Next row – Purl.
Next row – K1, sl 1, K1, psso, knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1 … 11 sts.
Next row Purl. Beg sides and top – Cast on 23 sts at beg of next 2 rows … 57 sts.
Next row – K1, inc in next st, knit to last 2 sts, inc in next st, K1 … 59 sts.
Next row Purl. Rep last 2 rows once more … 61 sts.
Next row – K25, sl 1, K1, psso, K7, K2tog, K25 … 59 sts. Work 3 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.
Next row – K25, sl 1, K1, psso, K5, K2tog, K25 … 57 sts.
Next row – Purl.
Next row – K1, sl 1, K1, psso, knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1 … 55 sts.
Next row – Purl.
Next row – K1, sl 1, K1, psso, K21, sl 1, K1, psso, K3, K2tog, K21, K2tog, K1 … 51 sts.
Next row – Purl. Break off C1. Using C2, Knit 4 rows garter st (every row knit). Cast off loosely knitways.

FINISHING
DO NOT PRESS. Overlap one side over the other side at front, then slip st neatly to the sole, sewing through both thicknesses at toe end. For the other bootie overlap in the opposite direction. If desired, sew 2 buttons on each bootie along C2 edge at front as pictured.
