Exploring Rawene
Catching the ferry to Rawene from nearby Kohukohu offers the most enchanting approach to the charming township of Rawene. Considered by many as Aotearoa’s third oldest European settlement, the hustle and bustle of days gone by have passed into history, but many of the heritage buildings remain, a colourful kaleidoscope that fuses past and present. This is Joanne’s home, a place of panoramic views and a colourful hub for creative souls and beautiful people.
Places to Eat
According to Joanne, you can’t go past The Boatshed, a rustically charming café overhanging the water. She’s also excited for the restoration of the ‘old pub’ that’s currently being restored to its former glory.
Art Trail
A number of artists call Hokianga home and Joanne recommends popping into No. 1 Parnell in Rawene, a gallery and café where you’ll find Joanne’s work. The historic building has been beautifully restored.
Historic Buildings
Peppered with heritage buildings dating back to missionary times, Clendon House is firmly on Joanne’s list of things to do. Significant for its associations with the bicultural history of the area, it merges early colonial architecture with aspects of Gothic Revival design.
Places to Stay
For a traditional Kiwi camping holiday, you can’t go past the Rawene Holiday Park! For something a little more luxurious, Joanne suggests the delightfully stylish Marriner’s Boutique Guesthouses.
