Explore my backyard
Central Otago is a destination for every time of year. We talk to Arrowtown-based architect Anna-Marie Chin about her top places to go when exploring this beautiful slice of Aotearoa.
Where to Eat
- There is no one place that I love as it depends on the time of day, mood and occasion, but these are my favourites …
- Mora Wines. For a relaxed sit-down with friends and family over a long lunch and a glass of wine, sharing platters – this is the destination.
- Aosta. While I am slightly biased as we did the fit-out for these guys, this is a wonderful Italian destination for a special occasion.
- The Cave. If you are seeking a relaxed Japanese eatery for lunch or dinner, this is my go-to.
- I also can’t go past Gibbston in the weekend. We love to bike out and visit any number of eateries – Mt Rosa for wine, Gibbston Tavern for a beer, Waitiri Creek Wines for lunch. The options are endless.
- There is much excitement about the new, soon-to-be-open (December) fish and chip shop in Arrowtown. They are encouraging you to bring your picnic blanket and sit on the village green to dine with friends and family. Rumour is they are able to sell alcohol!
Where to Play
- You can’t go wrong. There are so many wonderful walks with incredible scenery that allow you to experience the rugged, wild landscape of Central Otago. Glenorchy is a favourite.
- For those wanting more than a gentle stroll down the river in Arrowtown, the challenging Sawpit Gully is a must.
- And jump on a bike – go electric and enjoy miles and miles of track. The Lake Dunstan Trail between Clyde and Cromwell is spectacular for scenery, bridges and boardwalks that appear to hang off cliffs. Or indulge in a small portion of the Rail Trail.
- Wānaka’s Deans Bank or 7 Mile Scenic Reserve Bike Park are more playful options for those looking for jumps and adventure rides.
Where to Shop
- We have such a variety – no matter where you go in Central Otago you will find something special. One of my favourites is All Vintage Antiques, an old barn filled with items the owners trawl NZ for and then sell on the weekends. There is a mix of vintage, mid-century vases, clothes and furniture. There is always something different.
- For book lovers, The Next Chapter in Wānaka is a must-visit. It has the feel of an old-traditional bookshop and is a space you can browse, sit, read and discover. There is a wonderful selection for adults and children.
