Empowering Women Through Adventure

Coming together to laugh, train, push boundaries and learn new skills might sound like a challenge, but the journey to the start line is often the most cherished aspect for those taking part in this female-only adventure race.

There’s something uniquely Kiwi about the Spirited Women – All Women’s Adventure Race. It’s a celebration of camaraderie, courage and that unmistakable ‘give-it-a-go’ attitude that defines so many New Zealand women. From digging deep in the tough moments to laughing through the highs, it’s an event grounded in friendship and the thrill of shared adventure.

Since the first event in Rotorua back in 2016, the Spirited Women – All Women’s Adventure Race has become a much-loved fixture on the calendar, a moveable feast of fitness, fun and female empowerment. Over the years, it has wound its way across the country, taking thousands of women through stunning landscapes from Taupō to Gisborne; Marlborough to Wānaka.

Looking ahead to 2026, the thirteenth edition will unfold in Twizel, nestled in the heart of the majestic Mackenzie Region. With a cap of 402 teams, this will be the first Spirited Women event to be part of the global Adventure Racing World Series – a milestone for the event.

So, what’s the magic formula behind this phenomenon?

‘Spirited Women is about more than racing,’ says Event Manager Debbie Chambers. ‘It’s about making time for yourself, building confidence, and strengthening the bond between women through shared outdoor adventure. We see teams come together, train together, and take on challenges they never imagined they could do – and have an absolute blast doing it.’
