DIY Textured Canvas Art

Take a moment to slow down and unwind with this easy textured canvas art project. Perfect as a solo creative reset, a relaxed date night, or a girls’ night in, it’s all about playing with texture, pattern, and depth to create something uniquely yours.

You will need:

• Framed canvas
• Lint-free cloth
• Paint brush
• Rags
• Resene Colorwood Natural Wood Stain in your choice of colour
(we used Resene Deep Oak)
• Resene SpaceCoat Low Sheen in your choice of colour
(we used Resene Triple Rice Cake)
• Spatula
• Texture paste
• Trowel or paint scraper (straight or notched)

Instructions:

  1. Take the canvas out of the frame. Scoop texture paste onto your canvas and use a spatula to spread it into a smooth, even layer, covering the entire surface.
  2. While the paste is still wet, begin creating your background texture.
  3. Use a trowel or paint scraper to create your pattern. Have fun and experiment, there’s no right or wrong. If you don’t like a section, simply smooth it out and start again.
  4. After each major pass, wipe excess paste from your tool before the next.
  5. Once you’re happy with the design, scrape away any excess paste from the edges of the canvas for a neat finish.
  6. Allow the texture paste to dry completely. Drying time will vary depending on the thickness of the application.
  7. Apply a coat of Resene Spacecoat Low Sheen in your chosen colour. For a bolder statement piece, try using a combination of two colours.
  8. Apply a coat of Resene Colorwood Natural Wood Stain to the frame, then wipe off any excess using a lint-free cloth.
  9. Once both the canvas and frame are completely dry, place the canvas back into the frame and display your finished piece in your chosen space.
