DIY Magazine Stand

Keep your favourite magazines organised and within easy reach with this stylish, X-shaped magazine stand. This simple project requires just a few straightforward cuts and no nails or screws, making it a perfect weekend DIY that’s quick, easy and rewarding!

You will need:

  • 19mm x 280mm pine board, 1.2m in length
  • Clamps
  • Jigsaw
  • Lint-free cloth
  • Paintbrush
  • Pencil
  • Resene Colorwood natural wood stain in Resene Walnut
  • Sandpaper
  • Straight edge
  • Square edge
  • Tape measure

Instructions:

  1. Measure the pine board and mark it into two equal 600mm long panels.
  2. Clamp a straight edge to the board to use as a cutting guide, then carefully cut the board in two along your marked line using a jigsaw.
  3. Take one board and find the centre point along its length (300mm). From this point, draw a vertical line measuring 140mm upwards to the exact centre of the board. Then, from that centre line, measure and draw parallel lines 10mm to the left and 10mm to the right to create a 20mm wide slot. You should now have a marked notch that is 140mm tall and 20mm wide, centred on the board, as shown.
  4. Clamp both panels securely together, aligning the edges. Carefully cut out the marked notch using a jigsaw, cutting through both panels at once to ensure they match perfectly.
  5. Sand any rough areas and wipe the wood clean to remove all dust.
  6. Apply a coat of Resene Colorwood natural wood stain, following the grain of the timber. Wipe off excess with a lint-free cloth and allow to dry. Apply final clear coats of Resene Aquaclear clear urethane allowing dry time in between for an easy wipe clean surface.
  7. Once dry, slot the two panels together at the notches to form an X-frame. Place in position and add your favourite magazines on top!
