Bright & Breezy

This summer we are all about blurring the lines between inside and out. Think texture, pattern and timeless shades to make dining, relaxing and entertaining
al fresco just as easy and stylish as it is inside. Pip Goldsbury explains.

As a nation, we thrive on informality, flinging open our doors to welcome summer and taking our lifestyle to the next level with relaxed gatherings, good food and lots of laughter. It’s a blurring of lines between indoors and outdoors; supported this year with a biophilic focus on organic textures and sustainable finishes.

This summer, expect to see more soul over symmetry and personality over perfection. However, we don’t need to forgo style! Blend the transition from indoors to outdoors by honing in on natural materials, offering a nuanced nod to coastal style (without the cliché) and enhancing flow. Say yes to woven accents, from matchstick blinds to rattan fruit bowls and even grass cloth wallpapers! Fresh to Resene, I’m crushing on Eijffinger’s Natural Wallcoverings III. For the magpies among us, there’s even a little bling; and chromed cork wallpapers, that will satisfy curators of cool, welcome the return of art deco style.

No longer a mere deck, outdoor spaces are an expansion of the home, a place to socialise and connect. Flickering flames, a pizza oven, comfy seating and effortless living will always be showstoppers, but give some thought to the colour you introduce. Resene’s Charred Black exterior woodstain always delivers a grounding backdrop, ready for the fun to begin. However, playful, even futuristic hues, are having a moment, so why not lean into design-forward spearmint, using colours like Resene Soft Mint and Resene Envy on your planter boxes, or lovely lilacs like Resene I Do and Resene Bona Fide on coffee tables and drinks stations.

This summer, living is easy. Earthy and raw or whimsical and spirited, there’s something for everyone.

Step Inside the Project

White isn’t for everyone, but it is one of those shades that never goes out of style and means you can change things up with décor and furniture as your tastes or the seasons change. In this crisp outdoor space, the wall and table are painted in Resene Albescent White for a timeless neutral look, with added warmth of Resene Sorrell Brown on the floor and seat. For those wanting to create something similar, you could also get this same feel with a warm wood stain like Resene Woodsman Uluru or Resene Woodsman Heartwood. Pair this with whites like Resene Merino or Resene Eighth Spanish White, along with climbing vines, lush plants and an outdoor rug for some texture and freshness.

Flooring Top tip

Want a coloured floor? Use Resene Walk-on in your chosen colour. If your patio gets slippery when wet, use Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.
