Brewed, Not Woven

In search of Better Fibres, Fiona Bretherton, Sustainability Manager at Untouched World, is proud to be the first brand in Aotearoa to bring Brewed Protein fibre to consumers. Proof that innovation doesn’t have to cost the earth or compromise style.

‘As a sustainability professional in fashion, I often get asked how we can reduce our reliance on conventional synthetics without sacrificing performance. For summer 2025, we’re answering that question with Brewed Protein fibre. A radically new fibre tech company on the scene, that blends science, sustainability and performance, in equal measure. We are proud to be the first brand in Aotearoa to launch styles using this material, and it’s one of the most exciting developments I’ve seen in textile innovation.’

Designed for Wearability

Brewed Protein fibre behaves like the best synthetics whilst outperforming them in key ways. In our SS25 collection, we’ve blended it with 100% organic cotton, creating pieces that are incredibly soft and lofty, without pilling and with unbeatable breathability, thanks to its protein structure. It offers the comfort and utility of synthetics, without the planetary compromise.

A Smaller Footprint

Early life cycle studies show Brewed Protein fibre production could reduce environmental impacts significantly. Compared with conventional fibres, it uses:

  • 99% less land
  • 97% less water
  • 82% less nutrient pollution

And yes, it’s biodegradable. Unlike conventional petroleum-derived fibres, it won’t linger in landfill or pollute waterways with microplastics. The time it takes to degrade is dependent on the environmental conditions, but it’s always a matter of months. A significant improvement on the centuries it takes some synthetics.

Responsible Roots

Made in Japan using sustainably certified sugarcane, every stage of the process prioritises traceability and community collaboration. This isn’t just about materials – it’s about how they’re made and the people behind them.

Brewed Protein Fibre

Created by Japanese biotech company Spiber, Brewed Protein fibre is a plant derived, lab-crafted fibre that’s made without petroleum and without animal products. The production process starts with biomass – primarily sugarcane, which undergoes precision fermentation – similar to brewing kombucha. The end result? A high-performing, protein fibre that looks and feels luxurious, without the environmental baggage of synthetics.
