Springtime in Selwyn
Whether you are heading to Selwyn for a day trip, an overnight escape or a family adventure, this is an area bursting with hidden gems – especially now!
Nestled in the heart of Canterbury, extending from Lincoln, inland to Arthur’s Pass, encompassing the picturesque country towns of Darfield, Rolleston, Lincoln, Tai Tapu, West Melton and more, Selwyn has something for everyone. And never more so than in spring as they showcase all that country living has to offer.
At any time of the year a day trip in Selwyn can encompass wine tasting, golf, boutique eateries, walks and shopping – the choice is yours. ‘The Selwyn District appeals to nature lovers, thrillseekers and connoisseurs of life’s finest things,’ explains Selwyn District Mayor Sam Broughton. ‘Our activities are as diverse as the landscapes. The hills and mountains offer a wealth of activities, from skiing to mountain biking, jetboating and horse trekking in the high country.’
New Paragraph
As the winter months give way to brighter days and warmer temperatures, the vast array of events happening in Selwyn are worth adding to the calendar. ‘Our country fetes have a range of local crafts, food and music and are a wonderful day out. Or explore one of the traditional A&P shows, get some candy floss and watch the animal judging or wood chopping. Spring in Selwyn is all about meeting in the country. Tourism research has shown that people are wanting to visit natural attractions, explore off the beaten track, stay in rural accommodation and take the time to relax. This has become even more prominent due to Covid.’
While Covid and restrictions continue to play havoc on event organisers, those in Selwyn continue to forge on, in anticipation of showcasing their district to visitors. ‘It has been a tough time for all of our businesses and producers,’ continues Sam. ‘We worked swiftly and hard in Level 4 to connect food and produce businesses with consumers, providing contactless essential deliveries to local homes.’
‘It really helped us with exposure to new local customers,’ says Untamed Earth Organic Farm Co-owner Ollie Platt. ‘And we can’t wait to be able to show these customers [and those from the rest of Canterbury] around our farm later this year.’
Annual farm open days are a great way to connect locals and domestic tours with local producers and Ollie and his team are just one of the many working farms who open their doors – showcasing Selwyn’s strong connection to the land. ‘We have a number of farm tour operators who allow you to experience rural life and offer up close encounters with alpacas, lambs and farm dogs,’ says Sam. ‘People are looking for authentic experiences to make memories with their friends and family, and Selwyn is an ideal place for it. Meet us in the Country is a call to all those who appreciate rural living, natural landscapes and slow travel.’
So why not meet in the country this spring and experience all that this beautiful area has to offer?
